Buyer Guide – Peugeot Pepper Mills & Salt Mills
Peugeot, the world's sixth-largest car manufacturer, has been making Pepper Mills, Salt Mills and Spice Mills for even longer than they have been making cars. The Peugeot brothers converted the family mill to produce steel in 1810 and the steel pepper mill mechanism was invented by a Peugeot engineer. The mechanism was so reliable that it has remained in production, virtually unchanged, ever since and remains the most reliable on the market, so much so that it comes with a lifetime guarantee. The grind is very even, so they are very popular with chefs.
Peugeot soon expanded into salt mills and spice mills. Today the mills are made at Besançon, in south-west France. Nowadays they use machines but the Peugeot grinding mechanism itself has hardly changed in more than 100 years.
The Peugeot Pepper Mill Mechanism
The Peugeot pepper mill mechanism was specifically designed to mill peppercorns, and is adjustable, enabling pepper to be ground to every requirement, from crushed pepper for grilled steak to finely ground pepper for delicate sauces. A helix-shaped double row of teeth guides the peppercorns and holds them during grinding. The corns are cracked in half before the fine grinding process. A patented treatment protects the grinding mechanism from corrosion, maintaining its sharpness.
The Peugeot Salt Mill Mechanism
The Peugeot salt mill mechanism is specifically designed to grind large grains of dry sea or rock salt. The salt mechanism is made from stainless steel to protect against corrosion.
Peugeot U-Select
The latest Peugeot Salt and Pepper Mills utilise the Peugeot U-Select mechanism with several pre-set grind settings. Turn the stainless steel collar at the base of the mill to one of the pre-set positions to select the exact degree of fineness required. There are 6 pre-set levels for pepper and 3 for salt.
A Range of Styles
Peugeot produce a vast range of designs and sizes; from the traditional beech wood Paris Mill in sizes from 12cm up to a huge 80cm to the contemporary stainless steel Reims and the electric Elis models.
